Durnal, Belgium
Durnal is near some more popular climbing areas and can be seen as one of the easier areas of Belgium. If you have not much experience with outdoor lead climbing, or just want to have a relaxing day of climbing Durnal is your place. Are you more experienced? Don't worry there are also routes for you.
Located near the idyllic river Bocq, known for 'Brasserie du Bocq' that makes excelent beers, it is a former sandstone quarry. The rock is easy to climb, no heavy over hangs. There are routes that are in around 70 degrees, good to warm up or make your first steps of the season.
The last topo, from 2014, mentions 70 routes ranging from 6 rated in the 3's up to 8 6+ routes where the hardest are rated 6b.
On the right side of the wall most of the easy routes are found, in the middle the hardest routes are found and on the left we end with some grade 5 routes.
The nearest location to stay the night (by tent or camper) is Camping du Durnal. That is only a few minutes from this area.
Caution
Permits
Most of the climbing areas in Belgium are on private property or in nature reserves. For many of these climbing areas you have to be a member of a climbing association or be invited by a member.
Non-Belgian climbers must be a member of a climbing association that has agreements with the Belgian associations. Please ask your local climbing association. As a Dutchy and member of the NKBV you must have a 'klimjaarkaart' that can be purchased through the NKBV.
